It often seems like when young athletes are thrown into the popularity spotlight they handle the pressure one of two ways: they act as a mature and responsible young athlete who has there priorites set in line or they show how immature they really are and how they never really change. An example of both of these cases would be Carmello Anthony and Mike Vick. Carmelo Anthony entered the 2003 NBA draft after just one season with the Syracuse University where he won the NCAA Division 1 basketball championship. Carmelo was drafted behind Cleveland Caviliers sensation Lebron James in the 2004 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets. Immediatly Carmelo Anthony was a popular NBA star with many endorsements. To this day Carmelos only run in with the law was set up on MTV's hit reality Show Punk'd, where Ashotn Kutcher plays pranks on famous people. Mike Vick on the other hand has not handled the pressure of being famous as well. He was drafted number 1 by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 NFL draft. Mike Vick was said to be the new type of quarterback who had blazing speed and a lazer rocket arm. Something else Mike Vick brought to the table was a lot of off the field troubles. In 2005 Mike Vick attempted to use a fake name in a metro Atlanta pharmacy to pick up Herpes medicion. In 2006 Mike Vick attempted to bring onto an airplane as what was called a suspicious odor that smelled like marujunia by the TSA officials in the Miami Airport. We all remember the obscene gesture to the fans after a home lost in the 2006 regular season. Now Mike Vick signs a plea agreement saying he did indeed participate in dog fighting, after claiming to both NFL commisioner Rodger Goodell and Falcons owner Arther Blank that he indeed had never participated in these acts. Now Vick faces time in jail and the possibility of never playing in the NFL again. I think it is perfectly ok to say that these two athletes have handled the pressure in different ways and they really are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
